Our Programs

The Aardvark Sessions

The Aardvark Sessions are a six-month, weekly songwriting program for young people aged 14-24 (Aardvarkians) who love music and want to connect with others like them. Aardvark is especially suitable for young people who are at risk, disengaged, or experiencing adversity and therefore unable to access mainstream music opportunities. A music therapist, musician-in-residence and youth mentors take the participants through every step involved in song writing, music arrangement, recording and production, and creation of digital and public performance. Through this supported group process, participants connect with each other and share their experiences along the way. The aim is that those involved in the program develop invaluable musical skills, self-confidence, support and friendships. At the end of each year a CD launch is held to celebrate their achievements.

Dig Days

The monthly Dig Dig program offers young people who have completed the Aardvark Sessions the opportunity to become Aardvark alumni. In Dig Days the alimni continue developing their skills in a range of music industry related fields and stay connected to the Aardvark community.  Aardvark alumni may also choose to get involved in youth leadership roles as Vark Leader Crew members, mentors and young leaders.

Events and performances

Aardvark alumni also get involved in gigs and performances for wider community events and functions, such as concerts, parties and conferences. This gives participants ongoing opportunities to develop their skills and experience in all aspects of music performance, from developing set-lists and rehearsals, to setting up and packing down gear, stage craft and professionalism.

Songwriting for Team Building

Fostering Team-Building, Innovation and Social Action in Corporate Teams

Aardvark offers half day intensive group song writing workshops for teams within corporate organisations. Each workshop is facilitated by a professional songwriter and/or music therapist and the participants develop a team song based on the organisations’ mission, values, or chosen core theme. The experience gives corporate teams an opportunity to create music with talented, inspiring young people from Aardvark – and support their growth.

“Aardvark Corporate Songwriting Workshops draw participants outside their comfort zone and encourage them to look at situations in new and creative ways. “
Meagan Hunt, Aardvark’s Creative Director

Songwriting for Team Building Workshop aims:

• Build healthy, creative corporate teams
• Foster innovative, dynamic thinking in team members
• Give people the confidence to take risks outside their comfort zone
• Use songwriting to creatively explore the corporation’s mission, values or identified priorities
• Connect team members with young Aardvark songwriters from diverse backgrounds

Why group songwriting?

• The song writing process demands flexibility, creativity, healthy risk-taking and new ways of thinking about ideas/issues – skills that are critical for innovative thinking
• Group songwriting fosters connectedness, social engagement, and opportunities to know one another in new ways – healthy team dynamics require such opportunities to evolve

Songbook Sessions

For youth organisations, councils and schools
Aardvark offers intensive 2-4 day group song writing workshops to suit the needs of the young people of your organisation. Each workshop is facilitated by a professional songwriter and/or a music therapist, depending on the needs and the size of the group.
Two youth mentors from the Aardvark program co-facilitate to foster the connection between the young people of the Aardvark program and the community organisation. The experience provides an opportunity for young people in your organisation to develop skills in all aspects of songwriting while creating connections and making new friends.

“The facilitators were fantastic, with quality skills and it was great teamwork for our young people” - Hume City Council.
